Message from Sir Howard Davies

I am pleased to support the LSE Student Strategy and Management Consulting Conference.
As a former management consultant myself, I know that the industry can offer a wide range of interesting and satisfying jobs, whether for the short or longer term. Many LSE students are interested, but perhaps know less about the structure of the sector than they do about investment banks. The conference therefore fills a gap, and the organisers have assembled an excellent set of speakers.
I am sure the initiative will be successful. I hope it launches a number of new consultancy careers.
Sir Howard Davies
Former Director of the London School of Economics (2003-2011)

Message from the Founder

Welcome to the LSE Student Strategy & Management Consulting Conference!
This conference started as an idea in February 2010, when I was in the middle of my BSc Management degree at the London School of Economics. Today, it has become one of world’s largest and foremost consulting focused student-run forums, providing a unique collaborative platform for students, academics and professionals. I founded it to create a new structure that provides insights into global strategy directly from business leaders of our time and creates a novel networking experience for students from all around the world.
Through the variety of session topics, conference attendees could not only understand the bigger picture of consulting and enjoy unique networking opportunities, but also experience lively and stimulating debate about the key strategic and economic questions of our time.
On 01 November 2010, we kick-started the inaugural conference at the Freemasons Hall in London with 35 notable senior speakers from 23 of some of the world’s most successful firms and institutions. We selected 220 delegates from almost 1000 applications from 65 international universities and assumed that we could not go further. But this year, the interest levels for the conference were phenomenal, resulting in 2211 applications from over 45 countries and over 120 academic institutions.
The theme of the 2011 conference is “Succeeding in a Volatile World”. On the one hand, we will discuss the new realities of the post-crisis world, which is characterized by an inherent volatility. On the other hand, we will elaborate on the emerging opportunities within the global contestable markets. What strategies need to be adapted to win in this uncertainty? What change in the managerial mindset is required? And how can companies innovate, grow and outperform their rivals in the new uprising markets?
You were selected to attend this event, because you have already demonstrated excellence in both your academic record and your other achievements. Being selected for this conference also means that you are now part of a global exclusive network of like-minded and extraordinary students. Finally, this also means that over the next two days, you will meet global leaders from a variety of industries, recruiters from top firms and company representatives, who want to meet you and offer you a position within their company. Therefore, I would like to encourage you to seize this chance and make the most out of it!
On this occasion, I would also like to thank all the speakers and sponsors without whom we would not have been able to achieve our vision of laying the foundation for one of the largest student run consulting conferences in the world.
I wish you good luck for SMCC’s case study competition and hope you will enjoy the event.
Vyacheslav Polonski
Founder & President LSE SMCC
